Montreal Moments

Just got back from an enjoyable weekend in Montreal, Quebec and wanted to share some great spots I visited to give some travel ideas should you visit.

Accomodation: Marriott Westmount, 2170 Lincoln Avenue
A short walk from the Atwater Metro Station this hotel is both reasonably priced and well located. Park around the corner in the seminary lot for $15 / 24 hours.

Active day out in the city biking itinerary: Start off with a free breakfast at the Marriott then walk to Atwater Metro around the corner and purchase a day pass for$7 and check the Montreal Metro Map.  Be sure to use the automated machines as they’re cheaper than buying at the window. Hop on the green line heading towards Honore-Beaugrand. Change at Berri-UQAM (yellow line) and head towards Longueuil, getting off at Jean-Drapeau, which is an island in the St. Lawrence River. Leave the Metro station and you’ll see bixi bikes – rentals $5/half hour with $1 for each additional hour. Bike around the island’s F1 track which is home to the Grand Prix in the summer. Bird lovers should stop at the biosphere which is the giant globe building nearby (you’ll see it). Bike around the track and explore St. Helen’s Island. Either bike back to the bixi station on the island, cross over to the nearby Ile Notre Dame or cross back to Montreal, dropping the bike off at one of the Montreal bixi stations near the Old Port, passing the 1976 Olympic Village accomodations on the way.

Lunch: 3 Brasseurs, Old Port, Montreal. While this is a chain with 2 other locations on St. Catherine Street, the Old Port location offers a pleasant atmosphere and good beer selection that has particular appeal to thirsty cyclists. Order the platter and a pitcher of their new smooth honeybrown beer (note: 7% alcohol).
